Historical Trips around Prague
Trip no.1
A Trip to Prague Castle
Petřín Tower, Observatory, Mirror maze,
Medieval city walls Hungry wall
Prague Castle
Prague Castle is the most significant Czech castle (originally an early medieval fortified settlement) standing on a rocky promontory over the Vltava river in the center of Prague, on the hill of Opyš. From the 9th century it was the seat of Czech princes, later kings, and since 1918 it is the seat of the President of the Republic. Twice in history he became the main residence of the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire.
Gradual extensions and adaptations came from a fortified settlement built in the 9th century, with its dimensions of 570 m in length and 128 m in width, is one of the largest castle complexes in the world. The area of the castle is usually 7,28 hectares, [1] but is still the subject of disputes. It is regarded not only as a symbol of the city, but also of Czech statehood and according to the Guinness Book of Records as the largest ancient castle in the world. It is also the largest inhabited castle in the world, just behind it is English Windsor.
Part of the castle is the Cathedral of St. Vitus, the traditional place of crowning Czech kings and their last rest. Besides many Czech rulers (including four emperors), Prague bishops and archbishops, clergy, nobility and other people connected with the Prague court, some saints are buried in the cathedral - a large part of the Czech patrons (Saint Wenceslas, Vít, Vojtěch, Zikmund or Jan Nepomuk). There are also Czech crown jewels.
Petřín Tower
The younger sister of the Eiffel Tower
The Petřín lookout tower (378 meters above sea level) rises above the old center of Prague. This is probably why it is one of the most popular tourists 'and visitors' places. The surroundings of the lookout tower are the ideal place for walks and picnics.
The tower builders of the Czech Tourists Club were inspired by the World Exhibition in Paris in 1889 and decided to create a similar monumental building in Bohemia. The beginning of the work on Petřín peak dates back to March 16, 1891. The construction of a lookout tower, stairs and lift were built. The tower was built in just three months. At the same time, a well-known funicular from Ringhoffer was built on top of Petrin. The entire building was officially handed over to the public on 2 August 1891.
Petřín Observatory
The Štefánik Observatory at the peak of Petřín in Prague offers public observation of the day and night sky throughout the year. The observation of space objects is accompanied by a professional interpretation of the observatory's staff and demonstrators. There is also a new exposition - the Museum of Meteorites.
There are several telescopes for observation day and night in the Observatory. The most popular is the largest telescope with three refractors under the main dome. It is used to explore the night sky, but it also allows observation of the sun's surface and blasts in the sun. A permanent exhibition focusing on astronomy is installed on the ground floor of the Observatory, and if you want to learn more about swirling cosmos, you can combine your visit with screenings and educational programs.
Petřín Mirror Maze - fun for both small and large
The maze at Petřín was originally built as a pavilion of the Club of Czech Tourists at the Prague Jubilee Exhibition in 1891.
It was built by the Prague carpenter master Matěj Bílek according to the design of the architect Antonín Wiehl. The inspiration for the construction of the maze was apparently a mirror maze in Vienna's Prater.
The wooden maze building was originally near the corner of the Industrial Palace, two years later it was moved to Petřín next to Petřín Tower. The construction is an attempt to create a form of the former Gothic Vysehrad Gate, called Špička, built in the second half of the 14th century by Charles IV. The maze building is a proof of the Gothic construction at the end of the 19th century.
In the middle hall there is a diorama depicting the struggle of the Pragues with the Swedes at the Charles Bridge in 1648. The unusual combination of the three-dimensional scene with the Hradčan painting is the work of the brothers Adolf and Karel Liebscher and Vojtěch Bartoňka.
Both mirrors were installed in both side rooms, while the left room of the building was equipped with various convex and convex mirrors (so-called laughing hall) in 1911. There are 35 common and 15 distorted mirrors in the maze.
Hungry wall on Petřín
The significant Prague wall of the medieval city fortifications
It was built by the Czech King and Emperor Charles IV. Its main purpose was the defense of the Lesser Town of Prague, today the Lesser Town.
Originally the wall height was over four meters. Wall thicknesses of almost two meters were then reinforced by eight towers, which served, among other things, as observers. Subsequently, the battlements and the gallery were fitted to the wall. He was on the inside of the fortification, making it easier to move on patrolling the wall. There were also no streaks.
Over time, the wall has made several adjustments. They consisted mainly of new openings or the creation of gates that entered the fortified part. Some of them survived until the Thirty Years' War. The remains of these gates are currently used as passages.
